2011 Louisiana Small Business Winner Dr. Gerald Cvitanovich
The Jefferson Chamber announced the 2011 Louisiana Small Business Regional Winner, Dr. Gerald Cvitanovich of East Jefferson After Hours Urgent Care and Millennium Healthcare Management, Inc. Dr. Cvitanovich was nominated for his achievements in emergency medicine and the successful opening of the first urgent care centers in Jefferson Parish. His centers in Kenner and Metairie became the first free-standing urgent care centers in the country to be accredited by The Joint Commission. In 2009, Dr. Cvitanovich was also awarded the Charlet Business Award by the Jefferson Parish Economic Development Commission.

Dr. Gerald Cvitanovich Honored for Civic Involvement
Most New Orleanians are familiar with the heroic efforts of the Cvitanovich family in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Restaurateur, Tommy Cvitanovich, offered Drago’s Restaurant as an unofficial base of relief operations, providing nearly 80,000 people with free meals in the weeks following the storm. Just a few blocks away, brother Gerald did his own part to “heal” the community. Gerald Cvitanovich, MD (affectionately called “Dr. Gerry”) had East Jefferson After Hours Urgent Care in Kenner back up and running only eight days after Hurricane Katrina made landfall.

Accreditations / Certifications
MHM has facilitated the successful certification and accreditation of its centers by the Urgent Care Association of America and The Joint Commission. East Jefferson After Hours in Kenner and Metairie were the first free-standing urgent care centers in the country to receive the high distinction of accreditation by The Joint Commission.

The Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval™ is an internationally recognized symbol of quality that indicates a commitment to the highest level of patient safety and care. Our centers have met the highest and most rigorous performance standards to obtain this distinction. Accreditation by the Joint Commission is considered the gold standard in health care and is a voluntary action by medical entities. The accreditation process involves a challenging and comprehensive evaluation in order to review standards of care and make any possible improvements. Patients can be assured that all centers having the Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval™ offer a safe environment, patient education, privacy rights, complete evaluation and treatment, and protection against infection. The Joint Commission accreditation shows an extraordinary commitment to providing safe, high quality care, and a willingness to be measured against the highest standards of performance.

Certification by the Urgent Care Association of America distinguishes those urgent care centers showing a commitment to educate the community, provide a national benchmark for exemplary service, and clearly describe the level of services available. Certified Urgent Care centers meet or exceed the following criteria: (1) advertise and accept walk-in patients of all ages for a broad spectrum of illness, injury, and disease, (2) offer onsite X-ray, phlebotomy services, licensed providers, training for emergency situations, and private exam rooms, (3) operate 7 days per week, more than 4 hours per day, and 3000 hours per year, (4) designate a licensed physician as Medical Director of the facility to ensure clinical quality, and (5) provide medical care and perform business activities in an ethical manner.

Accreditation by the Commission on Laboratory Accreditation (COLA) ensures quality laboratory testing and compliance with the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) set forth by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). COLA is a physician-directed organization promoting excellence in laboratory medicine and patient care. Their accreditation process assists laboratories with safety, efficiency, and compliance. Through the education, consultation, and accreditation process COLA provides, laboratories ensure accurate test results, quality control processes, and complete compliance with all CLIA standards in order to better serve patients' needs.
